Covent Garden’s Location and History
Covent Garden lies on the eastern fringes of the West End; even though it’s less than 300metres from Leicester Square on the Piccadilly line, it still has its own tube station. The London boroughs of Westminster and Camden both fall within the district’s boundaries.
The area has two main claims to fame – the first is the Royal Opera House, which is sometimes just referred to as ‘Covent Garden’. The current Bow Street theatre (much of which was rebuilt and modernised in the 1990s) is the second, following two devastating fires in 1808 and 1856.
However, Covent Garden is just as well known for its markets. In the early 13th century, the area was owned by the Benedictine monks of Westminster, who maintained a convent garden on the site. Over the years ‘convent garden’ became ‘Covent Garden’. For many centuries the area was home to London’s biggest open-air fruit, vegetable and flower market; a tradition that survives to this day, although the main market is now covered. The area also boasts of restaurants, shops and other attractions, including the London Transport Museum and the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane.
